The roots of this story actually go back to late 2009 when Nokia alleged that the iPhone infringed on several of Nokia’s patents.. A year later and Apple fire back saying that Nokia infringes on some Apple patents. The in December Nokia filed suits in the UK, Germany and the Netherlands over 13 patent infringements. Nokias claims were over the inner workings of the iPhone and Apples were over the UI and design of the Nokia phones
Today, it was announced that Apple and Nokia have settled a deal to clear all the outstanding litigation between them. Apple will pay a one-off settlement fee and then pay ongoing royalties. Apple will now become part of a growing number of licensees of Nokia’s patents.
The total sum handed over was not disclosed but it was revealed that the patent payment would have a “positive financial impact” on Nokia’s results. This must come as some relief when recently the company had posted profit warnings after losing considerable market share.
